Special Education Information

The purpose of Tupelo Public School system is to provide guidance and instruction for each student so he/she shall become a contributing, self-supporting, member of an ever-changing democratic society by attaining the following attributes:  an awareness of potentialities, as well as limitations; acceptance of self; confidence in ones feelings; acceptance of society; capability to adapt to both self-needs and those of associates; self-sufficiency vocationally and as a consumer; literacy; and the capability to advance academic, vocational and cultural interests.

With this philosophy of education in mind, Tupelo Public Schools provides this page to inform students, parents, school personnel, and service providers, of the current laws, issues, and opportunities afforded by the INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (IDEA) PART B (ages 3-21).   The purpose of this Federal law is:

·                          to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for employment and independent living;

·                          to ensure that the rights of children and youth with disabilities and their parents are protected; and

·                          to assess and ensure the effectiveness of efforts to educate children with disabilities.

Tupelo Public Schools believes there are no limits on what students can learn, and learning must take place in a nurturing, safe, environment.  We recognize the diversity of individuals while assuring equity for all students.  If there are any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Tupelo Public Schools.
